How to Drive Traffic to your Website
First, let’s say why more website traffic is important?
It’s an indicator of your business growth and it helps in:
- Knowing how efficient your marketing is going.
- Improving your SEO.
- Increasing leads and conversions.
- Gathering insights about your audience to make decisions.
So, there are several ways to increase website traffic for free:
1. Doing on-page SEO
There are many tactics to do to increase the rank of each page of your website in search engines and get more visitors. This includes producing high-quality content that your audience is interested in. Also writing accurate and descriptive meta descriptions for your pages helps in knowing what the page is really about and this encourages the user to click. On-page SEO tactics such as these are free but do take some time.
2. Establish backlinks
A backlink is a link to your website from another website. Google will increase its trust in your business if it sees other trusted sites pointing to yours and this means higher ranking which leads to more traffic.
3. Post to social media
Social media will drive traffic to your website if you use its different platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn to promote your website pages. This way you can turn your social media audience into website visitors, and draw traffic from their networks if you post shareable content.
4. Include hashtags in your posts
You can include hashtags in posts that promote your website. In this way, people searching for your products and services will be reached, not only your audience.
5. Get listed in online directories
Many directories like Yelp have strong domain authority on Google. So, if you create a profile on one of these directories, a link to your website will be included on this profile. Getting positive reviews is likely to result in more website traffic.
6. Use landing pages
These are pages specific to your offers. For example, starting a free trial or redeeming a discount code. They contain the details users need in order to move forward and convert, and focus on one specific call to action, making it more likely to happen. Because landing pages are so specific, you can get very targeted in your messaging, increasing the traffic coming to those pages.
7. Target long-tail keywords
It is known that short-tailed keywords are searched more frequently, but targeting and ranking for them are harder. On the other hand, targeting long-tail keywords gives you a better chance of higher ranking, thus more traffic.
8. Email marketing
Promoting offers through email is a great way to get traffic to your website. These emails can contain links to your website. But be careful not to spam your users with so many emails or they will unsubscribe from your emails. Also, be careful about the email subject as it determines whether the email is opened or not.
9. Guest blog
Getting an industry influencer to write a blog on your site or even interviewing them and blogging the interview on your website will help get organic traffic. But also, the influencer will promote the content to his audience leading to more traffic.
You can also be a guest blogger in a complementary industry whose audience is relevant to your business. See if you can contribute a post to their blog with a link back to your website.
10. Engage online
You can be active in online groups and on websites relevant to your business, comment on blogs and social media posts, participate in conversations about your industry. This will give you more exposure and more profile visits, that’s why your social media profiles should contain a link to your website.
11. Google Analytics
Google Analytics is free to use, it gives you insights about the traffic to your website. This will help you know which strategies are the most efficient.
There are other paid ways to increase traffic.
1. Google ads
You pay to have your website show up at the top of search results for particular keywords. Paid search results show up first, at the very top of the results pages. This is a great way to get the right audience to visit your website.
2. Google Maps advertising
You can get your business to show up at the top of Google Maps search results. This will give more exposure.
3. Social media advertising
It is the same as search advertising, you appear in relevant feed. You can target your audience with more psychographic data.
4. Display advertising
Display ads are branded banner ads that get placed on relevant websites. This gets you relevant traffic to your website.
Retargeting ads can appear on websites or social media feeds. They are placed in front of people who have already visited your site once, and who are therefore more likely to return.
